Meet Tomi
played by Edison Medina
We talked to one of our lead cast members, Edison Medina, about playing Tomi in the film. He tells us all about his character, a catalytic moment in his career, and what he hopes audiences will take away from the film.
Edison, tell us about yourself!
I’m Edison Medina, and I was born in Riverside, California. I discovered my passion for acting at 15 through theater and transitioned to on-camera work at 17. Acting has been a journey of self-expression and creativity that continues to shape who I am.
Tell us about your character, Tomi. What three words would you use to describe him?
Tomi is funny, protective, and a rebellious artist. He’s that family member who has more depth than meets the eye. He may act out or make choices you don’t like, but there’s always a reason behind it.
For Tomi, nothing is more important than his older brother Ernie and their family. Despite his rebellious streak, Tomi’s actions are driven by love and the desire to protect them. I think audiences will connect with his role in the family and his emotional complexity.
What was hard about playing this character?
The biggest challenge was understanding who Tomi truly is—beneath the surface. I spent time exploring his motivations, emotions, and physicality to bring him to life authentically.

Acting and Life on Set
What’s a catalyst moment that changed your relationship with acting?
One time, the theater troop I was in competed at California State Fullerton. We were watching all the top schools perform their plays on stage and one of them really caught my attention. It was called Letters to Sala and it just completely blew me away with the performance and set. Everything they did made me admire the art and want to work harder to be a part of great plays like that.
What was it like to be in a film for the first time?
NIKI•TOMI•BETO was my first professional job and a major milestone in my career. It taught me the importance of collaboration and adaptability on set. Working with talented cast members expanded my understanding of the industry and strengthened my passion.
Can you share a memory from being on set?
Being on set for the first time was surreal. Seeing the cameras and performing made me realize, 'This isn’t just a dream anymore but an active goal that is slowly being achieved.' I loved the sense of becoming family with the cast and crew, who were welcoming and answered questions when I had them.
Final thoughts on the film?
Audiences will enjoy the genuine chemistry within the family and the authenticity we brought to the screen. I hope the film resonates with viewers by highlighting the complexities of family, cultural identity, and the courage it takes to express your true self.
